Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve answered the most common questions our customers ask about switchboard thermal imaging — from pricing and insurance requirements to what happens on the day. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.

Pricing and costs

How much does switchboard thermal imaging cost?

Our base call-out fee is $550 (inc. GST), which covers the first switchboard at your site. This includes the full thermal scan, on-site report generation, and all associated documentation.

For sites with multiple switchboards, pricing is reduced per additional board:

  • Industrial switchboards: $290.40 per board (from the 2nd board onwards, up to 11 boards)
  • Domestic switchboards: $199.10 per board

After 11 switchboards on a single site, per-board pricing drops further. Contact us for a detailed quote based on your specific setup.

Is the price per switchboard or per site visit?

Pricing is per switchboard, not per site visit. Each switchboard has its own price, which reflects the time required on site to complete the thermal scan and generate the report for that board.

The base call-out fee of $550 (inc. GST) includes the first switchboard. Additional boards on the same site are charged at reduced per-board rates.

Are there any additional fees or call-out charges?

Our pricing is straightforward — it’s a per-switchboard price with no hidden extras. A few things to be aware of:

  • Travel fee: A travel charge applies for sites more than 50km outside the city limits, calculated at $2.50 per kilometre. Travel time is measured from our last job or from the workshop first thing in the morning.
  • Parking fees: Included in the initial service call — no additional charge.
  • No extra call-out fees: Everything is bundled into the per-switchboard pricing.
Do you offer discounts for multiple switchboards or regular annual inspections?

Yes. For sites with more than 11 switchboards, the per-board price drops considerably. If you manage a large facility or multiple locations, we can provide a tailored quote that reflects the volume of work involved.

We also offer group discounts when multiple sites in close proximity are scheduled together. Get in touch to discuss pricing for your specific requirements.

Insurance and compliance

Why does my insurance company require a thermal imaging report?

Insurance companies require thermal imaging reports because switchboard faults are a leading cause of electrical fires. Industry data shows that 6 out of 10 fires are related to switchboard issues, which is why insurers are working to identify and address problems before they become catastrophic.

If underlying issues in a switchboard are left unaddressed, the risks include:

  • Fire hazard: Overheating connections and components can ignite surrounding materials
  • Electric shock: Faulty wiring and loose connections increase the risk of electrocution
  • Business downtime: An electrical failure can shut down operations entirely, costing far more than a preventative scan

A thermal imaging report gives your insurer confidence that your electrical infrastructure has been professionally inspected and any issues have been identified.

Will your thermal imaging report be accepted by my insurance company?

Yes. Our reports are written to be fully compliant with insurance company requirements. To deliver a compliant thermal imaging report, the minimum requirements are:

  • Level 1 Certified Infrared Thermographer — our team holds this certification, meaning we’re qualified to interpret and report on thermal imaging findings
  • Licensed Electrician — a qualified electrician must open the switchboard and conduct the inspection. Our team members are qualified electricians as well as thermographers
  • Professional Indemnity Insurance — we carry comprehensive professional indemnity insurance, so you’re fully covered

This is an important distinction — if the person conducting your thermal scan isn’t both a certified thermographer and a licensed electrician with professional indemnity insurance, the report may not be accepted by your insurer.

How often do I need thermal imaging for insurance compliance?

The required frequency depends on your industry and the type of facility you operate:

  • Every 12 months: Required for higher-risk industries including food manufacturing, chemical processing, clothing manufacturing, and any facility with fridge panels or flammable materials
  • Every 1–3 years: Standard commercial and industrial properties — your insurer will specify the exact interval based on your risk profile

If you’re unsure how often your business needs a thermal imaging inspection, check with your insurance broker or contact us and we can advise based on your industry.

What Australian standards does your thermal imaging service comply with?

Our thermal imaging service complies with the following Australian standards:

  • AS/NZS 3019 — Covers periodic verification of electrical installations. Thermal imaging is widely used as a non-invasive method to assist in condition monitoring and verification under this standard.
  • AS ISO 18436.7:2014 — This is the thermographic imaging certification standard. It means our thermographers are formally qualified to conduct thermal scans, interpret temperature differentials, and produce accurate reports on what the thermal camera captures.

We also hold a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) licence, which means a registered electrical contractor is performing the work — ensuring you’re fully insured and covered if anything were to go wrong.

This matters because if your thermal scan is conducted by an unlicensed operator, they may not carry the right insurance, and the report may not be backed by the qualifications your insurer requires.

Process and booking

What happens after I request a quote?

The process is simple:

  1. You contact us — by phone, email, or through our website
  2. We send you a quote — typically on the same day, with an itemised per-switchboard breakdown
  3. We schedule the inspection — once you approve the quote, we book a time that suits you
  4. We complete the scan and deliver your report — on the same day as the inspection

We don’t need to visit the site to provide a quote — our pricing is based on the number and type of switchboards, so we can give you an accurate figure over the phone or via email. However, if you have multiple switchboards and would prefer us to visit the site first, we’re happy to arrange that.

How quickly can you schedule an inspection?

Our typical turnaround from approved quote to completed inspection is 3–5 business days. We can also accommodate urgent requests, including same-day inspections where possible — particularly useful if you’re facing an insurance deadline.

Lead times are generally consistent across metro and regional areas, though for very remote locations we may need to coordinate a specific date to ensure availability.

Do I need to be on-site during the thermal imaging inspection?

Someone needs to be on site to grant access to the switchboard locations, but it doesn’t need to be the business owner — any representative of the company can let us in.

Once access is granted, you don’t need to stay with us. Each switchboard generally takes 40 minutes to one hour to complete the inspection. If your site requires security passes or access keys, we’ll just need these to be available when we arrive — we can handle the rest independently.

Can you provide thermal imaging outside normal business hours?

Yes, we can arrange after-hours inspections if required. In fact, for many facilities it’s actually preferable — we need the power to be on and systems to be running so we can get accurate thermal readings of the actual load being drawn through the switchboard.

After-hours pricing is assessed on a case-by-case basis, so please contact us to discuss your requirements and we’ll provide a quote.

Reports and deliverables

What is included in the thermal imaging report?

Our thermal imaging reports are comprehensive and designed to be easy to understand, even for non-technical readers. Each report includes:

  • Itemised survey of each switchboard inspected
  • Photographs of each switchboard alongside corresponding thermal images
  • GPS location data for each switchboard on site
  • Fault identification — any issues are clearly documented with photos and recommended corrective actions
  • Traffic light rating system — each component is rated red (critical), yellow (needs attention at next maintenance), or green (all clear), so you can see the status of every item at a glance

The reports are written in plain language and structured so that facility managers, business owners, and insurance companies can all easily understand the findings.

How quickly will I receive my report after the inspection?

Your report is generated on site and is available on the same day as the inspection. Once the invoice is paid in full, the completed report is emailed to you as a PDF — ready to download and forward to your insurance company or broker.

Is the report delivered digitally or as a hard copy?

Reports are delivered digitally as a PDF via email once the invoice has been paid in full. If there are multiple reports (for example, across multiple switchboards or sites), they’ll all be sent through in a file-ready format.

If you need a hard copy, we can arrange that as well — just let us know when booking.

The PDF format makes it easy to forward directly to your insurance company or broker.

Faults and repairs

What happens if faults are found during the thermal scan?

Any faults identified during the inspection are documented in your report using our traffic light rating system:

  • Red (critical): Needs to be rectified immediately — these faults present a safety risk
  • Yellow (attention required): Should be addressed at the next scheduled maintenance
  • Green (all clear): Switchboard is in good condition — no action needed

For minor faults: We can often provide an on-site quote to fix them while we’re there. If you give us the go-ahead and accept the quote, we can take care of it on the spot.

For major faults: We’ll provide a comprehensive quote and work with you to organise a plan to get the issues resolved. If you don’t have your own on-site electrician, we can supply one.

Can you fix electrical faults found during the thermal imaging inspection?

Yes. Our team members are qualified electricians as well as certified thermographers, so we can handle both the scanning and the repairs — giving you a genuine one-stop service.

If issues are found that require electrical attention, we’ll always issue a separate quote for the repair work. If you don’t have an on-site electrician who can carry out the repairs, we can provide a comprehensive quote and arrange for the work to be completed.

Do I get an updated report after repairs are completed?

If a follow-up thermal scan is needed after electrical repairs are completed, we offer re-scans at a heavily discounted rate.

In most cases, however, a re-scan isn’t necessary. Once your on-site electrician completes the repairs, they issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety. This certificate, combined with the original thermal scan report, is typically sufficient for your insurance company to confirm that the identified issues have been rectified and your switchboard is now compliant.

Service scope

Do you service both commercial and residential properties?

Yes — we service all types of electrical switchboards across both commercial and residential properties. The most common switchboards we inspect are in industrial settings, including:

  • Industrial switchboards and distribution boards
  • Main meter panels
  • Cubicle junctions
  • Electrical switchboards throughout manufacturing and processing facilities

While industrial switchboards make up the majority of our work, we can perform thermal imaging on any type of switchboard.

Can you scan multiple switchboards at different locations in one visit?

Yes, we can scan switchboards across multiple locations. Each site has its own setup requirements and minimum pricing — each location starts from $550 (inc. GST) for the first switchboard.

If your sites are located near each other, we offer a group discount for scheduling them together. Contact us with your site details and we’ll put together a package quote.

Do you provide thermal imaging for equipment other than switchboards?

Our core focus is switchboard thermal imaging, but we also regularly perform thermal imaging on:

  • HVAC systems
  • Data control cabinets
  • Machine control cabinets

If you have other electrical equipment you’d like scanned, get in touch and we can discuss your requirements.

Payment and admin

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept EFTPOS, credit card, and cash. For commercial clients, we also offer payment terms of 7–30 days — this can be discussed at the time of booking.

Invoices are sent via email along with the PDF report once the invoice is paid in full.

Can I get an invoice for my records or tax purposes?

Yes. A tax invoice is issued directly after the thermal scan is completed. Once the invoice is paid, your full report and tax receipt are emailed to you instantly.

If required, we can include a purchase order reference number on the invoice — just let us know when booking.

What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?

We always appreciate as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule. If a cancellation happens on the same day as the scheduled appointment, there is a possibility the deposit may be forfeited — however, we’ll always try to reschedule the appointment first.

If you need to change your booking, contact us as early as possible and we’ll do our best to find an alternative time that works for you.
